The Osmania University is a most popular public state university. It was established in 1918 by the Seventh Nizam of Hyderabad state, Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan. It is the first Indian university to have Urdu as a medium of instruction.

Osmania University is accredited by the NAAC with an 'A' Grade and conferred with the status of 'University with Potential for Excellence' by the UGC, New Delhi.

The OU is one of the largest university systems in the subcontinent with over 300,000 students on its campuses and affiliated colleges. Osmania University Admissions 2013-14
OU is a non-profit university which is funded and managed by the government.

Under-Graduate admission for Arts, Social Sciences, Commerce, and Physical and Biological Sciences is based on merit as manifested in the relevant pre-degree course. Admission  for Post-Graduate level and Ph.D programmes, based on entrance examination in the relevant subjects. The Admissions for Bachelor of Engineering, Masters and Doctoral programs in Main Campus is on a merit basis, evaluated by national entrance examinations like EAMCET, GATE, BCFSBTGMES-N&D, APLAWCET, O.U. PHD Entrance Exam etc.

The Director, Directorate of Admission will notify the Schedule of common entrance test(s). The common entrance test paper contains multiple choice objective type questions only and the answers for the questions are to be marked on the OPTICAL MARK READER (OMR) answer sheet by DARKENING the respective ovals with a H.B. PENCIL. (The candidate obtaining a minimum of 36 per cent marks at the respective entrance test is declared eligible to seek admission. However, there is no minimum mark for the SC & ST candidates).  Entrance exam for various P.G. and P.G.  Diploma courses Conducted in first / second week of June and after evaluation declare the results along with a rank wise merit list.

The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) shall be conferred by Osmania University in the Faculties of Arts, Commerce, Management, Education, Law, Social Sciences, Oriental Languages, Science, Technology, Pharmacy, Engineering, Informatics.

Eligibility :  He/She has obtained a Post-Graduate Degree, from a recognized University or a Post Graduate Degree through Distance mode from a recognized University and approved by the Distance Education Council (DEC), New Delhi,  in the concerned subject or in an allied subject approved by the Osmania University securing not less than 55% marks at the Post-Graduate Degree and securing not less than 50% marks in the case of SC/ST candidates. 


Interested candidates can appear for Ph.D. Eligibility test in the Respective subject. Those who are awarded research fellowship through a National level test namely UGC/CSIR/ICAR/ICMR/NETE/M. Phil/GATE/ SLET examination Of Government of Andhra Pradesh are exempted from appearing of OU Ph.D. eligibility test.
