Pondicherry University is a most popular and oldest central university, located in  Puducherry, India. It was established in 1985 by the Government of India.

It has 13 Schools, 37 Departments and 10 Centers offering 175 PG & Research programmes. The University has over 400 faculty and 6100 students from across the country on its rolls. There are over 45,000 students in its 87 affiliated colleges. The University is fully supported by the University Grants Commission. The University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.


The main campus of the University has an area of 780 acres spread on either side of the East Coast Road with the large chunk on the landward side of the road. The land is an invaluable gift from the people and the Government of Puducherry for the establishment of the University. PU is outstanding among the central universities in India. Teaching and research are its primary functions as in other Central Universities. In addition, it has also affiliated colleges located in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, Yanam and the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

The University has three campuses. The Main Campus is located at Puducherry and the other two off-campuses at Karaikal and Port Blair.

PU Invited Applications from the eligible candidates for the admission of Doctoral degree and Integrated doctoral degree in various subject through entrance exams.candidates who have qualified National
Eligibility Test/ UGC/ CSIR or UGC Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship for SC/ ST or DBT-BINC or such other examination recognized by University are exempted by the Entrance exam, they can directly appear in the Interview conducted by University.
Eligibility : Master's degree in any related discipline with a minimum of 55% of marks.
For Integrated Ph D - Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50 % of marks.
